That's nothing: wait until you meeet the details. And of course the oh-so-well structured file naming and directory naming conventions where all that cacophony is stored...

"service" oriented architecture?

"dis-service" oriented architecture.

APC, thanks for pointing out the nuances of the word "acronym". You're right, "acronym" has two meanings depending on the context. I think by "strictly" you meant the word's definition in the dictionary.

The dictionary definition of "acronym":

A word formed from the initial letters of a name, such as WAC for Women's Army Corps, or by combining initial letters or parts of a series of words, such as radar for radio detecting and ranging.

By this definition, XML is not an acronym.

But in technology "acronym" is:

A word typically made up of the first letters of two or more words; for example, BASIC stands for "Beginners All purpose Symbolic Instruction Code." Letters within a word are also used; for example, XML means "eXtensible Markup Language." Technically, if only first letters are used, the term is an "initialism," but this distinction is not widely made.

Eddie, be prepared to be disoriented, dazed, and confused by SOA. I've completed one SOA project and worked on another until it was cancelled (not for technology reasons).
Use the oracle Fusion/Middleware resources and particularly the Oracle people behind these products - they will prove invaluable.
Be prepared for a great deal of "sectarian" squabling among the microsoft/oracle/sun/etc camps - they all see big opportunities here and want their view of things to become the accepted way.
Very important - make friends with the network people (the guys who can run network trace analyzers). They will be needed to help you resolve finger-pointing.
Good luck with it and keep the blog posted - I am interested in your experiences with SOA.

May I be the first to point out that strictly an acronym is an abbreviation that is pronounced as a word. So SOAP is an acronym but XML is not.

Of course, acronym is one of those words whose meaning is shifting through misuse (like enormity to mean magnitude).

P.S. Bonus fact SOA is the Dutch abbreviation for STD (the medical term not the telecom one)
